late 1970s | unreleased demo | Tony Mansfield: Emily James |
(See my page "New Musik - The Story")
1979 | unreleased track | Tony Mansfield: Love Train |
Recorded just prior to the main FROM A TO B sessions.
1979 | unreleased demo tape | Tony Mansfield [titles unknown] |
Recorded just prior to the main FROM A TO B sessions. This demo tape is mentioned in chapter 13 in Pete Hammond's book "Get Down Here Quick and Mix Yourself a Hit", where he writes "Ironically the songs that got Tony his initial deal with GTO never got released". It is possible that "Emily James" and "Love Train" were both part of this tape.
18 April 1980 | withdrawn promo 7" | After the Fire: Love Will Always Make You Cry |
April/May? 1980 | test pressing LP | AFTER THE FIRE: 80-F |
Further info from https://www.discogs.com/After-The-Fire-80-f/release/15004826: "This acetate is a proto version of the album that became 80-f, recorded by Tony Mansfield before April 1980. Nick Brotherwood provided Drums as Ivor Twydell had left at the end of 1979. When completed, the album was presented to CBS, who rejected it. They subsequently sent the band off to Germany, with ex-Fly's drummer Peter King, to complete the album with producer Mack, who rebuilt the album. Four songs were dropped (Another World / Operator / Satellite In Orbit / Starflight reprise) and three new songs were added (Wild West Show / Why Can't We Be Friends / Joanne). The version of 1980-F on this acetate is the same version used on the 1983 US compilation [FE 38282], and Love Will Always Make You Cry was edited for the aborted single [S EPC 8942]."
Julian Carr told me 13 Nov 1999: "When this LP was rejected, Mack took over (in April 1980). Mack took the [old] tracks and mostly added extra layers, and re-recorded drumming (drums on the Mansfield version were by Nick Brotherwood - he left, and Pete King joined instead and did the Mack version). At least one acetate of the original album exists, pressed at Tape One. The new Mack-produced LP (Epic SEPC 84545) was released 24 Oct 1980."
1980/1981 | unreleased track "Pleasure Moves" | NEW MUSIK: ANYWHERE |
Lee Mansfield told me 14 April 2001: "There were a few tracks that were written around the same time [Anywhere sessions] that were never released. One I remember being played on a radio interview with Tony (Radio Jackie - a local South London based station) and it was called 'Pleasure Moves' - it had a similar feel to 'From The Village'." Lee even recalled some lyrics: "Once when friends stood together, change of time, change of weather, always the same, they've gone again...yet you remain... Oh it's a pleasure to be here, those moves are only for you, it's what you do - Your pleasure moves, your pleasure moves...."
19 Feb - 2 April 1982 | unused theme for "Finders Keepers" Season 2 | Tony Mansfield |
Mansfield fan Tim Masson sent me this info in Nov 1997: "In the past my older brother Steve has spoken to Lee Mansfield who said that PLANET HA-HA (Tony Mansfield + Rob Fisher + Lee Mansfield) were originally to become New Musik II. A single called "Finders Keepers" was to be released by them, but instead it was used on a children's T.V. game show of the same name ("Finders Keepers")."
This unused version is the original version submitted by Tony and Lee Mansfield in 1982. According to IMDB Peter Gosling composed the original theme (for season 1, 1981), and this 1982 You Tube clip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhk8VlndVpo confirms its continued use in series 2.

late 1982 ca | unreleased LP | PLANET HA HA |
Lee Mansfield told me: "Besides 'Home' and 'Finders Keepers' an album's worth of material was recorded, but due to the legal issues pending around Home, EMI delayed releasing the album, and eventually the various members moved on to other projects leaving the recorded tracks in the archives."

A purported two minute version appears here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnrbNjekrSo but it's simply a merger of slightly shortened edits of the original versions 1 & 2 in that order.
1984 | unreleased LP | MARI WILSON |
According to Mari Wilson's official site, there was a "1984 unreleased second album". I assume that the single "Let's Make This Last" was part of that project.
1984 | unreleased LP | VICIOUS PINK: BLUE |
Brian told me 25 May 2012: "We did have a rough track list, but I don't have it. We wrote a short story for the album too, that's missing, it's possible that Tony still has them".
Only a couple of singles were released after this, plus a Canadian LP in 1986 with the singles plus some remixes. Brian made some of the unreleased tracks available on SoundCloud.
1984/1985 | unreleased album | CAPTAIN SENSIBLE |
Around late 1984/early 1985 Tony and Captain Sensible started work on a third album. According to some information on the net, songs that were recorded include "(Within the) Bouncing Ball", "Dreaming" and "English Garden". Because of musical differences between Tony and Captain, however, the recordings were abandoned part way through and Captain went on to write entirely new songs for a new album with a different producer. So, the third LP with Tony and Captain remains entirely unreleased.
Captain Sensible himself told the story on http://www.terrascope.co.uk/MyBackPages/Captain%20Sensible.htm "I had far less control over the second album because Mansfield was becoming a bit of a megalomaniac. He tended to swamp the record with his sequencers. He totally relegated my guitar, the computers took his brain over until he worked his way up his own arse. We did a third album, I sunk every penny from "Happy Talk" into it and in the end I junked the lot. It just wasn't my album any more - it was well produced, but shit, without a spark of inspiration. Mansfield was such a dictatorial figure by this time that he would suggest that Robyn's lyrics were substandard and tell him to go away and do them again and tell me to change a tune or something, so we'd rehash the tracks and he'd still turn them down. In the end Robyn had had enough and left, the money was all used up and I was totally demoralised by the whole thing. Eventually I plucked up the courage to sack Mansfield, which was quite a big thing because I had all the hits with him. But, I'd finally had enough and told him to fuck off."
1985 | unreleased track "This Beat" | RE-FLEX |
Roland Kerridge sent me an email 1 Jan 2007: "Hi There, I just found your page dedicated to Tony and felt I needed to fill in something. I was the drummer from EMI band Re-Flex and whilst we were looking for a producer for our second album, I suggested Tony as I was a great fan of his work. We ended up recording a track with him called "this beat". We started recording it at Utopia studios and went straight on to Eel Pie to finish it. Unfortunately it did not turn out as we had hoped and was never released by the record company, but I still have a copy. Thought you might be interested."
He added the day after: "I have dug out the tape, which is a very rough mix. I remember that we did not finish it. The main reason it was never finished was that we all felt that it was not really representative of the band, which is ultimately the reason for not going with Tony to produce our second album. We started work on the track on a Friday, and Tony went straight through Saturday and most of Sunday without sleep! I found out later that this was fairly normal for him. We then went to Eel Pie studios to finish it on the Monday, by which time everyone was shattered and during that evening our A&R man came to the studio, but was not happy with what he heard so Tony was off the case. This in no way detracted from my appreciation of what Tony did and I remain a fan of his recordings, especially the New Musik records. The dates of the sessions are still unclear but the tape I have was dated 7th April 1985, which would be about the right time frame. Kind regards Roland Kerridge."

late 1998 ca | unreleased CD | eMUSIK |
Tony Mansfield was interviewed online 5 Jan 2000, where he said: "1) A new "new musik" album is in production and should be released in autumn this year." I assume he was referring to this e-Musik album.
